Home Made Babies
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is an assisted
reproductive technology (ART) procedure whereby washed
sperm from the male partner or a donor is placed
directly into the uterus of the woman, increasing the
possibility that sperm and egg will meet and a pregnancy
will result. It is a procedure undertaken by
millions of couples each year and costs thousands of
dollars per attempt.
Formerly
available only in specialized clinics, IUI is now being
performed by couples in the privacy of their own homes
for a fraction of the cost of a traditional,
clinic-based procedure. The purpose of Home Made
Babies is to provide information, support and
resources to those couples who are candidates for the
procedure and who are considering at-home IUI as a
viable method of family building.
Home Made
Babies is a first-hand narrative of one couple’s
struggle with infertility, how they successfully
performed IUI at home, and details the procedure they
developed which led to the conception of their son in
2005.
Written in collaboration with and drawing from the
decades of extensive experience of Dr. Panayiotis
Zavos, one of the world’s leading fertility specialists
and a forerunner in the at-home ART movement, Home
Made Babies offer a new voice of reason and hope to
couples who are seeking to restore privacy to their
reproductive lives.
Like
artificial vaginal insemination before it, at-home IUI
has been performed by countless gay and lesbian couples
and single women. Now, Home Made Babies
is taking IUI out of the closet and into the homes of
millions of American couples who are seeking an
alternative to today’s traditional ‘fertility
factories’.
